Reports from Japan indicate that Matusihima Air Base was devastated by a tsunami that was caused by the March 11th earthquake 130 km (80 miles) east of Sendai, Honshu, northern Japan.

Matusihima is only a few hundred metres from the coastline (click here for satellite image before tsunami) and it would have taken the full force of the tsunami waters.

Numerous aircraft have been reportedly damaged or destroyed, including a large number of Mitsubishi F-2 fighters.

All the branches of the Japanese Self Defence Forces have swung into action with aircraft flying reconnaissance missions over the devastated areas to assess the damage and rescue helicopters flying Search and Rescue missions.
